Default Pet exp

My ranger just turned in her original pet and picked up a new one. Do I take this new lvl 5 pet back to mobs it can kill to level it up or does it just tag along with me and get killed alot until it catches up ? I have never leveled up a low level pet with a high level character before.... thanks.

It's up to you. Neither method is better. As said, you can just go to Nightfall and ride wurms. Or you can death level the pet http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Death_leveling
It depends on what method you would consider fun.

Or you can use the services in the Menagerie at the cost of faction, coins, and gold. Visit the Menagerie or the wiki to find out the specifics.

Or you can build a decent bar for your pet, making sure you have Otyugh's Cry, Call of Protection, and a pet heal. Pets are quite sturdy and even a level 5 one shouldn't die much doing regular storyline content, except perhaps in Factions with all the Afflicted explosions, even against L20 foes - if you support it at all.

Really, your pet's level is not too important, except for determining how much health it has. Your Beast Mastery is far more significant. My Ranger's L12-16 Phoenix (I paid Balthazar faction to get the L12 at the Menagerie) has died less than a dozen times on the journey from Nahpui Quarter (including in the mission) to getting to Tahnnakai Temple, opening Gadd's Encampment and Finding the Bloodstone, reaching Rata Sum and getting to Oola at the bottom of her Lab, and a couple of Kournan missions. Surprisingly, none of the deaths happened going through the Shard's of Orr and that journey was the first time that no one in my party died even once while opening Gadd's... (I use Enraged Lunge, Predator's Pounce, Call of Haste, Otyugh's Cry, Call of Protection, Comfort Animal, plus a pair of bow attacks for me)

Since pets gain experience even while dead and off radar, I usually drag mine along with Comfort Animal squeezed into my normal bar. If it dies, it dies. I don't bother rezzing so as to not have to deal with my bar shutting down in inconvenient places.

What Star said. Just take it along without speccing into beast mastery or using any other skills for it. The first time it dies, don't res it. It'll get experience anyway, even off the radar.

If you want to level it while playing just take it along.

If you are looking for speed probably the fastest way is to death level it in the menagerie.

Here is the fastest method I found

Self: as low health as possible with sup runes and, if you have it, the -50 cesta. Either sac skills or vampiric weapon to kill yourself. Also have charm animal or some other skill to agro the pet you want as well as some damage to kill the ones you do not want to charm so they do not take xp from your target.

2 rezmers - mesmer heroes with maximum fast casting and resurrection spells that raise with 20-25% health (resurrection and restore life both work). One should have unyielding aura (block this skill)

1 n/r hero with charm animal and well of power to provide energy to the rezmers (block well of power until you have died so that it does not prevent your death)

Make sure heroes are set to passive

Turn your animal in to the tamer

find the animal you want on the menagerie grounds, start to charm it to make it hostile then cancel charm. kill all except one of the animal.

Sac yourself or equip vamp weapon to die

the resmers will raise you with less then 0 health so you will immediately die again even when in well of power.

unblock well of power

watch animal level to 20

If the animal wanders out of agro circle move the ua resmer close to it and micro ua to move you to the animal. (tigers especially tend to wander) (if you do not have the -50 cesta then ua may rez you with more than 0 health so make sure the hero is also outside the well of power circle when you cancel ua so that you are able to die again rapidly)

charm with hero

zone out and back in - turn it in to tamer then go and get Wynn to spawn you the level 20 evolution you desire and charm it.

Just over 20 min total
